The history behind the material
Manchester, also known as corduroy, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Originally developed in Manchester, England, it quickly became popular among the working class due to its durability and thermal insulation properties. The fabric is made from cotton or a cotton blend and is characterized by its characteristic ribbed surface, created through a weaving technique that forms parallel ridges or "wales."
During the 19th century, corduroy also became popular among the middle and upper classes, often used for hunting clothing and other outdoor activities due to its durability. In the 1960s and 1970s, corduroy experienced a renaissance in the fashion world, becoming synonymous with bohemian and casual style. Today, corduroy is appreciated for its combination of functionality and style, and is used in everything from trousers and jackets to vests and furniture. The fabric's versatility and timeless charm have made it a favorite throughout the centuries.
